Breaking the Habit of Breaking Umbrellas

An ingenious design by Ayca Dundar, a graduate from the Royal College of Art, calls for the end of useless umbrellas. How often do you see broken umbrellas lining the streets and stacked up by bins after a spot of bad weather, leading to the waste of many an unrecyclable heap of polyester and aluminium*? Well this was Ayca’s inspiration to create a sustainable umbrella that wouldn’t break at the first sight of wind and as our climate continues to change and gale force winds tear through the country more frequently, this is definitely something we’re going to need.

The design, called the ‘Drop’ umbrella, springs out of a handy bag like a pop up tent and has only 6 structural parts making it very durable and able to easily return back to its original shape after being turned inside out by a gust of wind.

So with an umbrella that will continue to work time and time again, there really is no reason not to walk to work, whatever the weather!
