Biodegr(edible). The new disposable.

American start-up, LOLIWARE have developed gelatine-based cups which are, as they say, “so biodegradable you can eat them.” Better yet, they use a vegetable gelatine, called agar-agar, which they claim makes the cups totally vegan and gluten-free. They’re currently selling cups in Pink Grapefruit and Yuzu flavours, which apparently go well with anything from whiskey-sours to champagne so they sound like a great alternative to their disposable plastic counterparts.

As fun, and great, as the idea of eating your drinks cup may be, LOLIWARE has served the greater purpose of reminding us of the common problem of everyday waste. Unnecessary packaging constitutes a great deal of the waste that ends up in  landfills, so the development of clever biodegradable alternatives like this are a welcome sight. We can only hope that the message will sink in and other companies, new and old, will follow suit and at least reduce packaging, if not actively attempt to get around issues of waste with initiatives like this.

But LOLIWARE cups aren’t the only way to combat waste, you can just try concentrating on buying recyclable and biodegradable goods next time you’re out shopping; though we do find the edible solution pretty intriguing.
