Creativity Against Earth Overshoot: Opportunities for Our Planet

The 13th August 2015 is auspicious for all the wrong reasons, the 13th August is Earth Overshoot Day. The approximate date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. We are in this ecological deficit by using up local resource stocks and pouring carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Earth Overshoot Day was reached by early October in 2000 and this year it is on 13th August.

Today, humanity uses the equivalent of 1.6 planets-worth of natural resources as well as carbon dioxide absorption. Based on current projections of resource use and carbon dioxide emissions, we are on track to require the resources of two planets before 2050. As the human population grows and global consumption continues to increase, we will make ever-increasing demands upon the forests, pastures, cropland, fisheries and other biologically productive areas of this planet we call home.

For Earth Overshoot Day 2015, we have partnered with Global Footprint Network to invite you to photograph, illustrate or design artwork to send a message to governments and people around the world, calling for change.  We want to see a celebration of the planet we live on and what that means to you. The winner will win £200 and their work will feature on the www.overshootday.org website (to be live soon) and the DTGT website.
