Not So Far-A-Field

50% of the world’s population now live in cities and this figure is rising all the time. The idea of getting fresh fruit and vegetables from a field only a couple of miles away from a city dwelling is almost laughable. In fact, the meal you had for dinner last night travelled on average an incredible 4,200 miles to get from where it was produced to your plate. But what if instead of all of our food being produced in a handful of large-scale establishments around the world or a field far outside the city, we all had a small farm just around the corner?

The phenomenon of Urban Farming is taking off in cities all over the world and small patches of disused land are being turned into cared-for spaces where communities can come together and learn about growing their own fruit and vegetables. A wonderful video from Monocle gives us an insight into 3 very different urban farming projects: watch it here.

This is an invaluable way to cut down the carbon footprint of the food we eat and create more sustainable cities. Not only does it significantly reduce the food’s airmiles, it also reduces the packaging required and encourages us to enjoy food that is in season. From aquaponics and hydroponics to vertical farming, there is a whole host of emerging techniques for producing food in limited spaces, like rooftops or old London Underground tunnels(!)
