Black Friday is upon us, and with it brings panicked reports of shoppers crushed by rabid crowds in pursuit of cut-price goods. It’s the beginning of a four-day spending spree that ends with Cyber Monday, where we fervently trawl the internet, on our own. In the rush to the holiday season, we’ll spend £10,000 per second on the latest fashions, gadgets and bumf in a bid to make ourselves, or someone else, feel more complete.
It’s four days of feeling as if our Christmas prowess is dependent on finding the best deal on the newest product. It’s a stress on our brains, and a nightmare for our planet. On Cyber Monday in 2012, overflowing demand meant that a delivery lorry left Amazon UK every 2 minutes and 10 seconds to fulfil overflowing demand.
This year, we’re taking a stand and taking a step back. We’re moving away from consuming and filling our mind with more creative tasks. In the spirit of Adbuster’s great Buy Nothing Day, we’re going to stick with and appreciate what we already have.
