The weather may have finally taken a turn for the worse in the UK, but summer is just beginning south of the equator. This week, our poster is taking on one of warm weather’s greatest climate offenders, air conditioning.
Air conditioning units are energy-draining vampires. They account for almost 20 per cent of electricity consumed in the US. To put that into perspective, that is equal to the amount of energy the entire continent of Africa uses for everything.
Aside from the rampant energy consumption aspect, the air conditioner is a powerful psychological tool. Their carefully controlled air help us believe that higher world temperatures are manageable, aiding our collective inaction. They lull us into a false sense of security, whilst in no way protecting us from the bigger threats of climate change, like rising sea levels, natural disasters and extreme weather fluctuations.
