Show Zimbabweans we see the terror. Wear a scrap of red fabric, or just torn paper with red felt-tip on it. This is to represent the bloodstained T-shirt shown on the news last night belonging to a 22-year-old MDC supporter, now dead. Pass this email on to as many people as you can.

Just found this site. Love it. Great. I'm a Compost Guru, a volunteer who encourages people to do Home Composting. I think composting waste is a Green Thing because it reduces landfill. You also create a mini wildlife habitat.

I like the new option to say how many times you've done it.

I remember reading something about how much earth needs to be excavated and the process used to make an iPod. It was an eye opener...3 tonnes of earth etc. It might be an idea to have an ingredients list for common things such as cars, TVs, Xboxes etc. The ingredients list would include how much earth would need to be excavated for the minerals to be extracted, the co2 implications, the paper used for packaging etc. Such a thing might sway somebodys mind when buying, 'do i really need that, is this an unnecessary waste of resources?'.

Hi there, I have a website for women who want to cycle and look good doing it www.cyclechic.co.uk. The site promotes cycling as a stylish, desirable lifestyle choice as oppose to a geeky sport! Reducing the individual's carbon footprint is at the core Cyclechic.co.uk by trying to get more women out of their cars and onto their bikes! The site offers a range of tips and advice from cycle fashion to cycle safety. You can also buy stylish cycling accessories from the Cyclechic blog shop. So do the green thing and join the Cycle Chic revolution!

I kept being laughed at for being a tree-hugger. And it's annoying. but i'm going to keep doing it because there are others like me... like you all. Unity is strength. And a greener Earth.
CarolTham at 04:31 on 06/06/08
Thanks ccardone - we're about to make a change which should help. When you click Done It next to an action, like Take the Stairs, say, you'll be able to say how many times you've done it. So you can count 20 at a time which should make it easier. thx
andyh at 01:15 on 05/06/08
Love the website. I'd really enjoy having an option to check off all the things I do daily, or that I've done since I was last here. I do some every day (like take the stairs and air dry) but it takes too long to come check off each one individually every day. It would be great to see the more accurate tally though!

Has anyone seen this guide to green towing? It's on www.ibuyeco.co.uk Some interesting stuff in there... I had no idea Cheryl Baker went caravanning!!!

To the admin of the website, Hey, My name is Agata Wojnowska, and I'm a student at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. This year, we have a project to do, which is to design, develop and create a new product, then prepare a businness plan for a new company. Since not many people in UK realise how important saving water is for the future, we deciaded to create a new eco shower which helps you not only to save water! but also energy and time. The name for out product is SAVAQUA. It a revolutionary shower with a sensor build in which stops the water when there is nobody under the shower (for example when you shave your legs). It is also design to shorten the time of taking a shower it has a timer build in, when you can programme the time you want to spend under the shower and after this time, the water will be gradually cut. We want to encourage people to take a 3 minuts shower. Since our product would be in the same topic as your website, we were wondering if we could consider linking us on your website, and what would the cost be, if any. I would be miostly gratefull, if you could contact me on my mail which is: aw90@hw.ac.uk any time soon. Also if you have any more qestions, i am very happy to answer them. Regards, Agata Wojnowska

Andy, all cool, but I'm thinking (you know me) and the thought is, "but will it appeal to or reach the people who need to be reached?" i.e. the masses? Outreach. So far the green thing is kinda preaching to the converted. But all good nevertheless. Well done.
greendragon at 12:06 on 10/03/08
go green thing! love it...plus it's amazing for our planet...so DO THE GREEN THING people!!!

Funny you should mention that. We're working on a FB app now and then an API so others can create widgets for us, and we'll prob do a Google Gadget and Apple widget too. Will any of those work for you? If not be good to hear what kind of thing you were after. Plse mail me at andy@dothegreenthing.com. cheers.

Great site :) There are so many seemingly insignificant routines we perform in our every day lives that contribute to our planet's environmental dramas. Such as: over heating our houses, letting the tap run while we brush our teeth, boiling a kettle full of water instead of just enough for what we need. Insignificant details? Far from it. We no longer need to mine or haul the coal for our fireplaces and we no longer need to fetch water from the well. Have we lost touch with what we need? I wonder how many people would keep their heating on all day and night if they needed to haul the coal to fuel it...
Amyeee at 22:54 on 19/02/08
Nice site! Can we suggest green things to be added over time to the to do list? eg you could have a gardening do-it theme: composting, rainwater collection, grow your own.... and please can we have something about not using/reusing plastic bags too??? can't wait to see my Co2 emissions plummet.

Feb's Green Thing is coming on Tuesday. We weren't quite ready on Friday 1 and our email partner Blue Barracuda can't send on the weekend, understandably (also weekend emails don't get opened so much). Monday emails get a bit lost as everyone gets back into work, so we'll send it out on Tue (hopefully morning). UPDATE: ok, the best laid plans, etc. Tomorrow morning now, with luck and a following wind. Tricky month Feb turned out to be!

I am sure global warming only affects USA and Europe. The last time i search for artists support for Green Peace campaign backed by Al Gore, guess what? Participants need to be from USA and Europe. People from China, India or Africa are not entitle to do so. Yeah right, i am sure it got nothing to do with politics.

Don't buy books!! Use the local library instead - they'll even order books in for you if they don't have them in stock. Think of all the trees that could be saved.
Sibylla at 12:08 on 22/01/08
What about suggesting that people join (and use!) their local library instead of buying (and throwing away) more books?

Hi gintare and aposto - black screens will save energy if you are using an old-style CRT monitor, but on an LCD (which around 75% of people have now) it makes no difference, and may use slightly more. Thx.
andyh at 10:41 on 22/01/08
nice web site and nice ideas!!! i would like to see the back colour in black instead of the white, in this way we can save energy.....after all "do the green thing"!!!

Green Thing great idea! Say it takes 10,000 bricks to build a house. One person? Lotta work! 5,000 people each carry one brick - hey presto! House in no time. In doing small enviro initiatives all the time, same story, hey presto clean planet!

As you know when monitor screen shows white color it takes more energy than dark screen, so I suggest to change your main page into www.blackle.com and even change greenthing's desigin into dark. It will help us to save more CO2.
gintare at 20:55 on 03/01/08
Funny video guys - I'm sure everyone felt like that going back to work this week. Here's to a green New Year!
jodmd at 18:51 on 03/01/08
Santa wrapped my kids' presents in newspaper - they asked him to cos it's greener. It took us ages afterwards picking off the sellotape so the paper could be recycled, but it made us feel good!
Nutcracker at 11:58 on 03/01/08
Did anyone else wrap their Christmas presents in newspaper? Took ages matching a newspaper article to the person or present but worth it!

walter at 11:23 on 03/01/08
Ta Lucy. Sorry SusanGreystone, no offense intended. Good points Bill & Jane, Loppy and PaulAlexander, thanks. Agree about the Black Country wbafcben, but we’re just reusing a Google map so have to go with their world view I’m afraid. Love the photos gintare. Paveuta, old things already exist so don’t create new CO2. There are plenty of new products made from recycled materials out there - definitely better than non-recycled materials so a greener thing to do - but the key to doing this particular Green Thing is buying old.
andyh at 12:54 on 31/12/07
Hi, can someone advise whether buying 2 garments made out of recycled yarns count? These are not old things but old ones made new, with some CO2 added in the process....
paveuta at 11:40 on 31/12/07
oh I already done it :)
gintare at 16:58 on 30/12/07
I have some greate photos, but I don't know hot to post it... :?
gintare at 16:52 on 30/12/07
I'd really appreciate it if you put a label for the Black Country on the map (it's just to the west of Birmingham)! I'm a YamYam, not a Brummie :p! Great-looking site - I look forward to reading more articles and watching more videos soon.
wbafcben at 18:13 on 28/12/07
As Chrismas fast approaches wind the clock on a week and consider what you do with all those old Christmas cards? My suggestion is NOT to throw them but to cut up the front face pictures into attractive sizes and then use next year to label the Christmas presents! Do it when you take the cards down and put them away with the gift wrap you cleverly buy in the Sales in January at half price! Got it? Good ! Sorted!
paulalexander at 11:17 on 24/12/07
Being careful with water saves carbon. Flushing drinking water down the loo is a waste of the energy used to make drinking quality water. I use bath water to flush the loo.
loppy at 16:12 on 23/12/07
You can often find better quality things in second hand shops today than on the high street
Bill & Jane at 01:57 on 22/12/07
Not sure about your Christmas card. Have to say that I find it vaguely offensive, and I'm not even old. I would definitely use one that was less silly.
SusanGreystone at 16:54 on 21/12/07
What a cool website, I flipping love it!
Lucy at 03:20 on 21/12/07
Thanks for the magazine article aoitenshi, much obliged. Perhaps post a link when it comes out? Green Thing certainly loves pot plants shoekiwi123 ;-) And special Green Thing friend Judithclegg, have you tried clicking the DONE IT button on the top header menu? That takes you here http://www.dothegreenthing.com/green_actions where you get a full list of all actions so you can say you’ve done as many things as you want in one go.
andyh at 16:43 on 20/12/07
This is the sole reason the internet was created. A collective unconscious act of total collective communication just as the global civilization collapses. We retain the data and survive better than the last time the global civilization collapsed.
LloydHart at 04:54 on 20/12/07
Buy pot plants. Or should I say potted plants. They soak up CO2. And look nice. If everyone buys one, or more, that's a lot of pot plants, soaking up a lot of CO2. Could be the next Green thing? Please spread the word.
shoekiwi123 at 19:28 on 19/12/07
Andyh - Oh, sorry I must've missed that when I checked out the map. I actually wrote an article about Green Thing that's coming out in a magazine here this December. I hope that will help a bit in spreading the word about Green Thing around these parts.
aoitenshi at 00:58 on 19/12/07
i am really enjoying it, i love green thing! . it would be great to back-date activities because I keep forgetting to log in when i have done them and it would be good to record a few at a time when I just entered a couple i could only see how to record them for today rather than in the past Judith

Thumbs up to Bertie Aherne and the Irish government for announcing in this weeks budget that by 1st Jan 2009 all traditional lightbulbs will no longer be able to be sold! Bulbs must be green/long life and enviro friendly! Way to go Bertie! Remember it was the Irish who banned plastic carrier bags a few years ago and also banned smoking in all pubs etc some three years ago! Everyone else in Europe is now playin catch up on these two issues alone. Nice one

Dear Green Thing people. In the spirit of this month's Green Thing, please check out my friend Stas's newly launched website: www.LetsAllShare.com, a free site that allows you to build and join online communities in order to share or rent items, services and recommendations. It's simple and effective!
Linny at 22:33 on 05/12/07
hi aoitenshi - the map only shows the 200 cities with the most visitors. You could always start a local campaign to do the Green Thing and get the Philippines on the map ;-)
andyh at 16:39 on 05/12/07
Hmm I'm in the Philippines, but it's not showing up on the map.
aoitenshi at 16:27 on 05/12/07
Thanks Bridget and well done for switching. Why don't you click 'Done It' at the top, click on 'Get better electricity' and see what it does to your Carbon Savings figure in your profile. It will also do a power of good to the overall Green Thing figures. No pun intended with the word 'power' of course.
Naresh at 00:30 on 03/12/07
I love the quirky creative ideas on Green Thing, but also the fact that you link to some hardcore information. I just found out about British Gas Zero Carbon through the site and signed up.

Of course milims, Green Thing should be everyone's thing so please spread the word far and wide however you want. Sounds like a great idea to make it part of your Green Day. btw Fatbird46, there's lots of discussion going on at Green Thing HQ about whether you're Jo Brand (we've obviously got too much free time on our hands).

Love the sire - heard about it on Radio 2 yesterday and signed up today!! We do the green thing all day and every day as best we can and now I'm working on bringing the green thing to work and the community too - in fact I'll probably use this on our "Green Day" if that's ok with you guys!!

deliagoldsby at 12:27 on 22/11/07
I've decided to abandon the car and use the train and bus when getting to work. I won't work from home because I'd have to heat the place. I've finally trained all the creatives to turn their screens off at night. I'm hoping to share a bath later too ;-)

ThwunkBadidea: We're serious about getting as many people as poss in as many countries as poss to do the Green Thing, and we think that entertaining folk is one way to get them to take the first step. Of course not everything is going to appeal to everyone - sorry this didn't to you. thanks.

just what immediately hit me was ... do the kind of people that come here want to listen to rock music whilst watching a dancing green penis?? I almost felt ill - not because this kind of thing offends me but ... because it just does NOT fit! (no sexual inuendo there, unlike this site) How old are the webmasters? But I still know how I'M gonna do the green thing? - i'm gonna paint a toilet roll green and have sex with it instead of wasting womens time ... which is money ... and they can get busy cleaning the house and recycling things ... !!! Thats what i expect from this site? nothing less .... This place is a Joke Hopefully you clean up your act ( hahaha ) before you hit the headlines and get shot down ...

Hi - it's a v. good point: what if people either can't or for some other reason don't want to do the main monthly Green Thing? That's why we've always got a choice of Do More actions which relate to the main monthly thing (e.g. actions relating to driving less as well as walking more). And we have a "What other Green Things can I do?" link on the homepage to make sure if the lead action isn't possible or doesn't appeal, others might. And there's always the wiki http://www.dothegreenthing.com/wiki/display/WIKI/Home which has many different actions under a range of categories. Hope that helps.
andyh at 08:02 on 31/10/07
Love the idea, however I just went to "spread the word" to a friend and realized she couldn't even do the premier event - walking. She's wheelchair-bound!!
GreenSpice at 22:42 on 30/10/07
I have a site for all of you green things to check out! It is called bikefurthereatcloser.com and is a massive adventure some girlfriends of mine have embarked on. I am doing the fundraising for them so if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them!

Hi, just came in to work from my first work. It's not very easy, because I live quite far from where I work and I usually carry my laptop. Yesterday I left it here so as to be very light while wlaking today. In fact I liked It so much I'm scheduling a "walking to work" day every month... Or, lets say, even every two weeks! That would be wonderful :) Nice site, love it, keep up the good work!!
wintermute at 08:09 on 25/10/07
That's a very good point! You're right we should have made one of the options opting to give up your car altogether. We're working on November right now but will try and put that in later. Thanks!
andyh at 19:56 on 23/10/07
Why are car clubs the only option under not owning a car? How 'bout a just don't own one option? A rely on public transportation option? Or something of that ilk? I went carless 4 years ago this month. I said to myself "I'll try it for 3 months" but after 6 or 7 months I realized that my 3 months were up but I didn't need or want a car. I walk, ride my bike or take the bus. Oh, and it's profitable too. My stock portfolio has benefitted greatly from money that would have otherwise been put to car payments, insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. Make the leap it's easier than you think ;~)
acarmichael at 12:59 on 23/10/07
Thanks anwaya - much as I'd love to say Green Thing is co-locating data centres with Google all around the world, we're not quite there yet ;-) When Headshift's server falls over we'll probably think about mirroring or something. Good point about green tech though. Communications technology should be part of the long-term solution to a low carbon economy (telepresence, etc) but only if we're really careful about how computers are made and disposed of and powered. There are some great initiatives going on about that like the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. And here’s a useful resource Green Thing has been looking at: http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2007/05/12/resources-to-create-a-green-website/

On May 10th and 11th 2008 we are staging the UK’s largest greener living expo - LONDON AWARE ’08, (www.ukaware.com) at the Barbican Centre London. We will showcase cutting edge products and services which allow companies and the public to reduce their carbon emissions without dramatically changing their ways. We believe that the mass market needs to be able to see, touch, feel, talk about and experience the market alternatives in order to understand how easy it can be to reduce their carbon emissions. We are expecting in the region of 10,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors. To complement the expo side of LONDON AWARE ’08, we will be offering 32 carefully selected experts from politics, business and environmental science the opportunity to address our audience with a 45 minute talk on an appropriate topic which they feel passionate about. We are also hosting the ‘UK AWARE Student Eco Innovator Award’ for the next generation of designers to showcase their eco friendly designs. Have a look at our website it is lovely. www.ukaware.com

Thanks to all for the feedback so far (all the more so since it's positive ;-). As for turning purple if you don't do enough Green Things, funny you should say that... we've got a little surprise coming in the "My Creatures" section later in the month. I'll leave it at that for now.

Wow, am just getting a handle on all this...and noticing that I'd better get on and do some more green things, or I'll start turning purple...well done guys, brilliant idea.

I have just found green thing. I love the colour green and I have a general love of things so it works out quite nicely. I'm still slightly confused by the website layout, but I've not had my cup of Green Tea (green replacement for coffee) this morning.

Julia, keep the shoes flat and add the height with a hat.
Naresh at 13:04 on 09/10/07
This is going to ruin my shoes - can I get some advice on flat shoes that still make me look 2" taller? or good heels for walking? (would save me re-hemming all my trous)
juliagroves at 12:49 on 09/10/07
Trevor, what type of trousers do you walk in? It might have something to do with that. I wear dark blue boot cut jeans and I find I often bump into childhood sweethearts who seem to throw themselves upon me. I'm sure it's the jeans.
Naresh at 22:28 on 08/10/07
I have walked to work daily since signing up, and not once have I had the opportunity to make love to a childhood sweetheart in a tent. Am I doing something wrong?
trevorcoultart at 21:33 on 08/10/07
Check out www.walkit.com a route finder for pedestrians in London, Edinburgh and Birmingham. More cities are planned. It tells you how to get rom A2B on foot, giving stats like how many calories burned and CO2 avoided.

I'm all about this site - great idea, great execution, and kickass monsters. I'll be walking in to work tomorrow with my head held high.

Giles, there's an answer in the faq to exactly this queston: where does Green Thing's money come from? It's actually mostly in the form of pro-bono contribuitions of time and services at the moment. But in terms of cash, Green Thing is independent and no

Good work - this looks great. Anything we can do to make the world a happier and healthier place, all the better. Who id paying for all of this - or is it really just for the love of the planet?
